Thijs Doornbos GameDev portfolio

Hi, My name is Thijs. I am a backend-engineer turned gamedeveloper. With over 16 years of experience in the Unity game engine I am currently using my expertise as a freelancer. Working predominantly in games for Science I have co-developed several games that are being used in Behavioural studies by Universities around the globe.- Game Developer / programmer specializing in Unity / c#
- Experienced in backend engineering (focus on Django/Python)
- Proficient in networking with Mirror
- Skilled in shader programming using ShaderGraph
I invite you to explore my portfolio. Let's make games together!
All of my projects are Unity based. See Gamejam for my ludumdare entries that were all made in 48 hours.

Django project: The Oak Log

We use a VR environment to safely stimulate a real stress response in participants

  • During play, we monitor each player's Heart Rate Variability (HRV), a measure for the body's response to acute stress.

  • As players get more stressed, audio and visual components are restricted, making it harder to complete challenges.

  • These challenges are key to assessing how well players can stay in control while under pressure.

  • The more players learn to stay calm, the easier it is to succeed. This feedback loop trains their autonomic nervous system's response to extreme danger: improving performance when it matters most.

Freelance projects

Decision Under Stress Training.Client: Radboud University & Dutch National Police CorpsProduced: VR gamePeople are often more impulsive and less deliberate when in stressful contexts, this is especially problematic for police officers. I was asked to create a low-cost tool to help practice controlled responses to threatening situations.DUST uses a custom controller that measures diaphragm expansion to sense breathing and heart rate variability (HRV). This information about their physiological state is fed back to the player as a restriction of the visual field and a variety of other audio/visual cues.Inside a controllable yet stress inducing context like a zombie shooter, DUST proved effective at both training the physiological control of police trainers in a stressful context and also extracting meaningful behavioral metrics.

Playing 4 Change: School-based violence prevention for the digital nowClient: University of California, Berkeley.Produced: iPad game + Backend architectureA collaborative iPad game was created specifically to foster a sense of "Heat" among participants. The game is designed to be played with the guidance of a counselor, aiming to provide young adults struggling with anger issues an opportunity to identify and manage their anger effectively.

(Alpha stage)
A multiplayer space survival game built in Unity using Mirror.

I made a custom shader by combining a low poly flat shaded gradient look with a custom outline post processing effect.
The outline utilizes the vertex color map on 3d object allowing for very crips lines and negating the need for fully mapped uv's resulting in a very high speed asset workflow.
